Catholic moral theology: Grave matter, full knowledge, deliberate consent= mortal sin.

Full knowledge and deliberate consent are no brainers,

They had each.

Grave matter.....there is nothing more grave than lying to the citizens of an entire nation over whose lives you hold unequalled power.

I am not a moral theologian but I say , "Get thee to confession" And, for your penance, because you have irretrievably broken national trust, you must resign !

Probably not. There is no explicit textual recognition of Congress or the Supreme Court in the Bible. Therefore, lying per se may be a sin, but only in the abstract sense that it must be seen to be so in the eyes of God. And, if such were so, it would have been cited somewhere in scripture. Further, a lie must be believed to be a lie, otherwise it is a tautological vagary. A whole new line of scholastic thought may derive from your astute question. Amen.
