Tomorrow, June 19, is the birthday of the late great movie critic Pauline Kael, who was a good friend of mine. It might be jolly, I thought, to post here a tribute I paid to Pauline twenty-four years ago at her 80th birthday party.
Then it hit me:
June 19 is Juneteenth: the anniversary of the day in 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation) when federal troops announced to heretofore enslaved people in Texas that they were officially unenslaved.
